Messages on the 2008 Rotary Leadership Institute

Dear Club President: Greetings to you! I hope you are having a successful and satisfying year as club president. I am pleased to announce that our district will again offer the very popular Rotary Leadership Institute April 5th, 2008 at BOCES in Verona with Parts I, II and III, and Graduate offered. Attendance at this institute is a wonderful way to learn more about Rotary whether you be a new or long time member of Rotary.

The institute also serves as an important way to train current and future leaders of Rotary. A well trained and certified faculty will facilitate each part of the institute with special emphasis on what is happening in Rotary today.

Registration for and other information on the Rotary Leadership Institute may be accessed online here. Please share this information with your club members on a regular basis. Attendees of past Rotary Leadership Institutes report that the experience is inspirational as well as a way to promote excellence in Rotary.

The Rotary Leadership Institute, of which our district is a member, has scheduled courses at twenty three (23) locations in the northeast USA and Canada this Rotary year. The Institute, a multi-district project of 26 districts, conducts courses throughout the region to further Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for those identified by their clubs as having the potential for future club leadership (not necessarily as a club president).

The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for voluntary organizations. Some examples of course sessions include, “A Look Outside the Club”, “The Rotary Foundation”, “Membership Retention”, five sessions on “Leadership”, “Creating Service Projects”, “Public Relations”,”Vocational Service”, “Membership Development”, “Analyzing a Rotary Club”. “International Service’, “Written Communications” and “Public Speaking”.

The Rotary Leadership Institute – An Opportunity!

The Rotary Leadership Institute, of which our district is a member, has announced that courses this Rotary year will be held in sixteen locations in the northeast. The Institute, a multi-district project of 26 districts, conducts courses throughout the region to further Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for those identified by their clubs as having the potential for future club leadership (not necessarily as a club president).

The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for voluntary organizations. Some examples of course sessions include, “The Perfect Meeting”, “A Look Outside the Club”, “The Rotary Foundation”, “Membership Retention”, five sessions on “Leadership”, “Creating Service Projects”, “Public Relations”,”Vocational Service”, “Membership Development”, “Analyzing a Rotary Club”. “International Service’, “Written Communications” and “Public Speaking”.

In the past year, 93 Rotarians in our district completed Part I, II & III of the three-part series, and 6 of those Rotarians completed the full series by attending sessions in neighboring districts.

Our district will host Parts I, II and III of the Institute three part series, on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica NY. Additionally, Parts I, II and III with be hosted by District 7170 on Saturday, March 29 at the Best Western Regency, Binghamton NY.

The all day courses start with registration at 7:30 a.m., a breakfast meeting at 8 a.m. And conclude at 4:30 p.m. Additional information and registration forms can be located here on the District 7150 Website's RLI page or on the RLI official website.

The Beginning of RLI in District 7150

The first District 7150 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) was held on Feb. 24th, 2001 in Liverpool, NY. Thirty five D7150 Rotarians from eleven clubs attended the event, commenting it was "the most informative and interesting Rotary forum I've attended". You may view pictures of the forum here.

It took two years of exploring and planning to bring RLI into our district. PDG Ed coordinated the event. This happened also because of the expertise, planning and coordination of the Zone 31-32 Rotary Leadership Institute faculty, under the leadership of PDG Dave Linett. The faculty and planners came from throughout our District and traveled to D7150 from other districts in Zones 31-32 to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Rotary Leadership Institute

What is our mission? The mission of The Rotary Leadership Institute is to provide an educational opportunity for Rotarians identified as potential leaders by their club presidents. Each club president will be asked annually to nominate club members as potential club leaders (not necessarily future presidents) in the years ahead. Courses will be given for the nominees to foster Rotary knowledge and leadership skills. It is hoped that these courses will also motivate the participants to be enthusiastic, creative and dedicated Rotarians. Those attending the three course days for their full duration will receive a recognition of completion. Course methods will reflect the most innovative and participatory methods possible. Methods will include discussion groups, role-playing, problem solving workshops, group planning exercises, etc. Lectures are limited.

What are the courses? The Institute offers a leadership development program in three full day sessions (Parts I, II and III). The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for voluntary organizations. When and where are the courses held? Courses are held at various locations throughout the year to accommodate the Rotary clubs in the member districts. Any nominee may take a course in any location. All courses start at 8:00 AM with breakfast and end at 4:30 PM.

What are the teaching methods? The Institute believes in course sessions with as much discussion/participation as possible. Discussion breakout sessions are limited to approximately 10-15 persons. Lectures are strictly limited. Course methods include discussion groups, role-playing, problem solving workshops, creating projects and audio visual presentations. Everyone participates during one of the Institute's sessions. A course workbook containing an Institute Manual, session program agendas, faculty biographies and course outlines and materials, is provided to each attendee.

Who are the faculty? The faculty are carefully selected by the Institute for their teaching abilities. They are drawn from all areas of the member districts and occasionally from outside of the member districts. Many are present and past RI directors, present and past district governors, successful past presidents and those with experience in special areas. Each new faculty member must attend an initial full day training program and various reorientation programs periodically. The results of evaluations help the Institute to improve the course content and instruction.

Why do we need a leadership institute? Rotary needs a constant influx of leadership as club officers, etc. since they change every year. It is difficult at the club level to learn enough about the exciting world of Rotary with its 1.2 million members in 163 countries. Furthermore, leadership skills in voluntary organizations are often different from business leadership skills. It is important that club leaders have every opportunity for education because the success or failure of our clubs depends in large part on the quality of their leaders.

Who should be nominated to attend the Institute courses? The Institute recommends that candidates should have those qualities that mark them as potential club leaders, not necessarily future presidents. They should be at least 3-4 years away from a possible presidency or other high leadership post. They should certainly have a strong interest in Rotary and be ready to be exposed to the larger world of Rotary. The Institute requests each club to nominate one or two Rotarians each year.

What are the costs? The current course fees are $85 per registrant per day. The fees include breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks and considerable materials given to participants. Course fees also pay for meeting space, audio-visual equipment and promotional costs. We recommend that clubs pay the fees for their nominees.

Should our club participate? If your club cares about its future, it will want the best leadership possible. This is an outstanding opportunity for each club to improve the Rotary knowledge of its key people and to be exposed to new ideas of leadership. The exchange of ideas with other experienced Rotarians alone makes the courses worthwhile.
