Aug. News from the Kuyahoora Valley Club--

Gerald M. Hill, Secretary of our club for a number of years, died August 11, 2000 at his home in Newport, NY, of complications due to cancer. Born in Utica on September 6, 1935, Gerry was the only child of the late Clifford and Minnie Truax Hill. He graduated from Poland High School in 1953 and from Utica College of Syracuse University summa cum laude.

Gerry furthered his education at the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned his masters in business management. On June 8, 1957, he was united in marriage to the former Clara Santamour at St. John's Church, Newport. The couple had resided in Rhode Island where Gerry was employed for 30 years as a physicist at the Navy Underwater Systems Center in Newport, RI.

He retired in 1990 and the couple returned to Newport, NY. Gerry was a volunteer for the Herkimer County AARP Chapter 1410 where he specialized in tax preparations. He was also secretary of the Kuyahoora Valley Rotary Club, and a trustee of the Newport Free Library. Survivors, besides his wife of 43 years, Clara, include one son and a daughter-in-law, Clifford and Crystal Hill of Coral Cables, FL, and four grandchildren.

Gerry was a fine example of a Rotarian, father, and husband. He was only sick for a few months, but did not complain and kept up his good humor and spirit until the end. The Kuyahoora Valley Rotary Club will miss him.

On December 13th, at our annual Christmas dinner, the K-V Rotary Club will award a Paul Harris Fellowship posthumously to Gerry Hill.

Feb. News from the Kuyahoora Valley Club--

The Rotary Club of the Kuyahoora Valley was saddened by the recent death of long-time member (25 years) Richard Rasch. Dick was one of our most active members and could always be counted on for various work projects and other activities. Dick was also extremely active as a Little Falls Hospital volunteer. He will be greatly missed by all.

Our club recently had an evening work session at the Children's Museum in Utica, helping with insulating upper story windows. The club also made a financial donation to the museum to help repair damage suffered during a recent freeze-up and flooding. From Gerry Hill, Secretary

Sept. News from the Kuyahoora Valley Club--

9-7-99 Travis Coleman, 9 years old, of Newport, with his proud parents, Martin and Kimberly, displays his Kuyahoora Valley Rotary Certificate of Achievement. Travis earned this award by reaching the 100 Books Read Milestone in the Readers Boot Camp program.

One hundred books, steadily increasing in difficulty over ten months, would be quite an accomplishment for anyone, but what makes Travis' case special is that he had basic reading problems only ten months ago. For this success, credit goes to Travis' doggedness and his mother's loving patience through days and nights of never-ending homework. Where to now? Next stop: 400 books!

Readers Boot Camp is a literacy improvement program run by the Kuyahoora Valley Rotary Club with assistance from the Middleville, Newport, and Poland libraries. Readers Boot Camp is open to everyone, young or old, who wishes to read better. Contact any of the libraries above for further information.
