4-4-04: Dear Friends - Your charming team have arrived: tired, a little disorientated, but cheerful and excited. They are healthy and we will make sure they stay that way. Since we parted at the airport they have travelled 150km South of Durban to their hosts in Port Shepstone. The weather is good, all of them commented on the warmth and moderate humidy. They have a demanding but very comprehensive programme. They certainly will not have much time or reason for boredom. Beth and I are thrilled to have them. Fondest regards, Beth and Hennie de Bruinw - View more info about the D7150 visit & pictures |

I live in the awesomely beautiful South Coast of KwaZulu Natal in Umzinto.- 2 minutes away from the beach. During the day I am at work at the Umzinto Correctional centre where I head the Education and Training centre. I am committed to the upliftment of literacy in my province and my country. I am also the chairlady of the KwaZulu Natal Department of Correctional Services Abet Committee. I qualified with a B Paed Degree in 1990, in 1994 I obtained my B Ed (Hons) Degree in Educational Management and in 2000 I completed my Masters Diploma in Human Resource Management. I am currently studying for an Honours degree in Abet. I have no special dietary requirements. With the above in mind I would like to visit some correctional centres on my tour abroad. I don't have any medical problems yet and know that I have no allergies to any foods or medication. * Jeffrey & Nishi are both educationists in the Department of Correctional Services in KwaZulu-Natal. They are responsible for the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programmes which are run in the prisons in which they work. Rotary has become very involved in this rehabilitative aspect of the incarceration system. Team Member: Mary-Joe Emde- I am a mother of three boys - ages 4, 9 and 11. My husband and I both work from home. I am an independent skills consultant and assist small, medium and micro business with developing their skills in the financial services sector. I am a trained Psychologist but decided the financial world was far more exiting and entered into it about 10 years ago. I have since completed my Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning and now focus on the training and development of Financial Advisors in this sector. I am very passionate about life long learning and follow that philosophy through out my life. In South Africa we are undergoing a major transformation in our education system and I am privileged to be part of that transformation. I subscribe to the philosophy that one can never have enough knowledge and that the world out there offers us with a wealth of information. I am passionate about travelling and together my husband and I try to travel as often as possible. We have taken the kids with us on our overseas travels and they have only benefited form the experiences. If we are not able to take them with us we take them to the Transkei over Christmas where the coastline is something out of this world. Everybody forgets about his or her troubles and we just enjoy what nature has to offer. When we are not working we enjoy the outdoor life and all the boys in the family love the sea. We live by the coast and none of us could ever imagine leaving the sea. The boys have coached me into fishing and it is now a competition most of the time as to who can catch the biggest fish. (Mom is mostly the winner - I am not sure if it is mostly beginners luck or what) I also like to take time out for myself and love reading autobiographies. During this trip I would like to visit institutions that focus on financial literacy and also like to see how education is delivered in America. The financial services industry forms an important part of all world economies and I would like to share my experiences with my hosts as well as learn from their experiences. We are very focused on Outcomes Based Education at the moment, which might not always be a cost effective method in a country like ours, but I feel strongly that learning has to be learner focused and everybody must be given equal opportunity to learn. The promulgation of recent legislation has also brought along a host of difficulties for our industry in terms of Recognizing Prior Learning and I would like to research methods of assessment to address these problems. Team Member: Mbali Ngcobo- I was born 37 years ago in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. I'm a single lady and have a 6-year-old son who goes to a preschool. I have two sisters and two brothers. My father has passed on and my mother is a retired nursing sister. She is 75 years old. My mom, one brother and sister live in Durban. One sister is married and lives in Pietermaritzburg and my other brother is a pharmacist in Botswana. I live in an area called Sobantu with my son and a lady who helps look after him when I'm at work and my dog, Tiger. My home language is Zulu and English is my second language. I do not have any special dietary or medical needs. I enjoy watching TV and making new friends. When I completed my matriculation, I enrolled at local university to study a Bachelors Degree in Art and majored in Geography and Psychology. After completing a BA degree I did a diploma in Education. I taught Geography and School Guidance at a local high school called Zibukezulu for eight years before joining KZN Wildlife where I'm currently working. I was also a school counsellor at the school. Learners will come and see me with various problems. We will discuss problems and I would deal with those that I could deal with and refer them for professional help where I could not help. Teachers also came to see me with their problems. What made me happy was that learners and teachers alike trusted me with their problems. I think the reason for this was that I treated them and their problems with respect. I'm currently working for a provincial conservation body called KwaZulu - Natal Wildlife. The core function of KwaZulu - Natal Wildlife are biodiversity conservation (inside and outside protected areas), Partnerships (with neighbouring communities) and Ecotourism (nature- based) tourism. I'm a trainer with KZN Wildlife. As I do not have a conservation background, I only train staff in soft skills or human skills such as customer care, mentorship etc. My duties include staff management and coordination of Adult Basic Education and Training (literacy) programme. We have an ABET problem because a large percentage of KZN Wildlife staff did not go to school or spent a few years at school for different reasons. For some their parents could not afford to send them to school, some had to drop out of school to work in order to feed their families, for some their parents did not see the importance of education. The coordination involves ensuring that learners attend classes, accommodated and provided with food, sourcing facilitators and learning and teaching material. ABET training is a priority for our country because a large percentage of South Africans are illiterate. This is a reason why Abet training is taking place in Prisons, Churches, Schools and Companies. View District 3500 Website & Maps below
District 9270 Description & Maps of South Africa Rotary District 9270 is located on the east coast of South Africa. Comprising about 1200 Rotarians in 50 clubs. Rotary clubs are located in 53 countries in Africa. There are 831 clubs with almost 20,000 members who subscribe to a common motto, "Service Above Self." Clubs are comprised of business and professional leaders within the community. The first Rotary club in Africa was established in 1921 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The first Rotary club in north Africa began in 1929 in Cairo, Egypt, was established in 1929. In 1930, Rotary International entered east Africa, with the admission of the Rotary Club of Nairobi, Kenya. The Rotary Club of Dakar, Senegal, established in 1939, was the first club in west Africa. The Rotary Foundation recently announced a Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative which will better coordinate Rotary's work in Africa. Our 2003-04 Rotary International President Jonathan Majiyagbe, if from Kano, Nigeria. District 9270s major programmes/initiatives: The District Adult Literacy Programme – District 9270 has since 1994 undertaken a massive programme involving many clubs, aimed at providing or facilitating adult literacy classes throughout the district. The high rate of illiteracy which typifies Africa, was not helped by the apartheid era. Rotary, with the aid of Rotary Foundation funds and donations from many parts of the world, has trained or helped to train “teachers” who give after-hour classes in church halls, the garages of private homes as well as for the staff of large organizations and convicts serving prisons sentences. At a conservative estimate, at least 300 teachers have been trained and 12 000 learners have benefited from this Rotary initiative. The Unite Against Hunger Campaign – Our district, along with the others in South Africa, has recently joined forces with major food producers and supermarkets, to collect donated food for distribution to the hungry. District 9270 has been very involved in both fund-raising projects for Polio Plus as well as the actual dispensing of the immunising drops. District 9270 have been very involved with the Rotary Foundation Education programmes. Ambassadorial scholars and GSE teams are sent and hosted as regularly as is allowed. Fifty four outbound and an equal number of inbound Rotary Exchange Students will respectively be sponsored and hosted during the current Rotary year. Although it cannot strictly be called a district project, almost every club in District 9270 has some project aimed at improving the provision of education to children. Hundreds of classrooms have been built by Rotary. Libraries have been stocked and other learner support material has been donated to previously disadvantaged schools. Other initiative include: View Map of South Africa * View District Governors * View D9270 website
